What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy incorporates mindfulness practices like breath-work, meditation, and physical postures. These are used to help ease the mind and calm the body.

Online yoga therapy provides the convenience of being in your own home while we navigate your personal difficulties and ease the pain of what you’re experiencing. I am able to provide the same services that I do in person, right to your own home.

As an online yoga therapist, I am able to address concerns such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, body image, trauma, and overall whole-body health. As a trained yoga therapist, I have experience and education in helping clients get to the root of the problem while addressing the symptoms they are experiencing.

Regulating the Nervous System With Yoga Therapy

Are you someone whose mind can’t get away from racing thoughts, tightness in your chest, or uneasiness in your stomach? Anxiety can be debilitating. So, it needs to be addressed from a whole-person approach. We address anxiety in the mind through understanding your negative core beliefs and work on rewriting your narratives so that you can operate from a more positive outlook. We address anxiety in the body by regulating the nervous system to effectively calm the body.

Regulating the nervous system means developing tools to help you respond to stress in a healthy way. This means moving through stress instead of fighting it or just managing it. First, we have to understand how you respond to stress. Then, we can work on developing coping mechanisms that benefit you instead of keeping you stuck in the same maladaptive patterns.

How People Respond to Stress Through the Nervous System - Fight, Flight, Freeze, or Fawn

Our bodies have ways to help us react to stressful or traumatic situations. Many of us will instinctually react with one of four responses, fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.

Fight:

You may be someone who will dive head on to the problem at hand, feeling a sense of competitiveness or anger. Your body is in a state of “on guard” to anything that is perceived as stress.

Flight:

The flight response signifies someone who will avoid, escape, or withdraw from any perceived difficulty or stressful situation. People with a flight response have difficulty identifying how they feel.

Freeze

Someone who engages in the freeze response becomes overwhelmed and becomes hyper-vigilant to perceived stress.

Fawn

The fawn response is a newer identified response in the stress response system. There is an automatic need to please others in order to avoid conflict.

Once we identify how you respond to stress, we can then work on helping you develop healthier ways to respond to that stress instead of the maladaptive ones you have been using. It’s natural for us to develop these patterns if we have never been taught healthy ones. Many people haven’t been taught how to manage their life stress in a way that helps them. We do the best we can and at first, those mechanisms work, but eventually, they end up becoming more harmful than helpful.
