How Regulating Your Nervous System Can Alleviate Chronic Pain and Illness

Chronic pain and illness can be incredibly debilitating and impact your quality of life.

While medication and other forms of treatment can provide temporary relief, they don't address the root cause of these conditions. Because of that, the relief from your pain is short-lived. This is why I find it important to address the root cause of your chronic pain and illness so that you can move forward living a pain-free life.

My own journey with chronic pain and illness is how I ended up helping my clients regulate their nervous systems. It can be such an effective way to alleviate chronic pain and illness long term instead of the band-aid fix you find with medication.

How Your Brain Creates Chronic Pain and Illness

When you have chronic pain and illness, your brain signals the pain from a sense of fear or danger. The signals are sent to the body to protect you from harm and keep you safe. This is fantastic in many scenarios, e.g. when you’ve broken a bone. Your brain lets your body know you’re in pain and that something isn’t right.

However, sometimes, your brain fires pain signals to your body even when you’re not in any direct physical danger. So, yes, you really are experiencing pain in these moments. But the pain doesn’t need to be there because there isn’t a physical origin.

Explaining Danger Signals

Our nervous system plays a crucial role in protecting us from danger and keeping us safe.

When it senses a threat, it sends out danger signals that trigger our fight-flight-freeze response. This response is designed to help us survive, but it can also result in chronic pain and illness if it becomes chronic. This can develop into illnesses like anxiety, depression, IBS, sciatica, migraines, or joint pain, to name a few.

When you learn to minimize your nervous system's response to stress, you’ll be able to lower the number of danger signals being sent that are causing you pain.

What is Nervous System Regulation?

Nervous system regulation is the process of controlling and balancing the activity of your nervous system. This involves calming down the fight-flight-freeze response and reducing the number of stress hormones that are released into the body.

By regulating the nervous system, we can reduce the impact of stress on our bodies and alleviate chronic pain and illness. I go deeper into nervous system regulation in this post if you’re interested in learning more.

Change Your Mind-Body’s Automatic Response to Stress

One of the most effective ways to regulate your nervous system is by changing your mind-body’s automatic response to stress.

This can be done through physical and mental nervous system regulation tools, meditation, deep breathing, and other relaxation techniques, like yoga. By becoming more aware of our thoughts and emotions, we can start to change our automatic response to stress and reduce the impact of stress on our bodies.

In my program: Mindbody Healing Method I teach you practices to help you relax your nervous system, send messages of safety to your body, and find relief from chronic pain and illness.

Once I learned how to tell my brain that I was safe and could handle the emotional pain that came up, my chronic pain and illness disappeared. I didn’t need to fight to control my body anymore because my nervous system was regulated.

Results You Can Expect

By regulating your nervous system, you can expect to experience a number of positive changes, including:

  • Reduced chronic pain and illness

  • Improved sleep

  • Increased energy and vitality

  • Improved mental health and overall well-being

This doesn’t happen overnight, but once you learn to regulate your nervous system, you’ll have the skill in your toolkit for any hard times that come up in the future.

Regulating your nervous system can be an effective way to alleviate chronic pain and illness. By calming down the fight-flight-freeze response and reducing the impact of stress on our bodies, we can improve our physical and mental health and transform our lives.

If you are someone who’s dealing with chronic pain or illness, consider incorporating nervous system regulation into your treatment plan and experience the benefits for yourself. Not sure where to start? This is exactly what I do.

Meet the Author

I’m Grace, a holistic psychotherapist, nervous system coach, yoga therapist, and pain specialist. I started my self-development journey at 15 when I first began psychotherapy. Then, I started developing chronic physical symptoms at age 20 that lasted for years without answers. I would cry myself to sleep, fearing that this was my new normal.

After discovering the holistic world and working on regulating my nervous system by working with the mind and body, I started to see big changes.

I healed fibromyalgia in 3 months and chronic histamine headaches in 2 weeks from using this work. The Mindbody Healing Method (MHM) has completely changed the way I live and see the world. This is why I devote my life to this work, and absolutely love helping others heal and eliminate the pain and suffering that can come from chronic mental and physical pain.

Imagine finding peace in your mind and body, knowing that recovery is possible. That’s what the Mindbody Healing Method could do for you.

MHM is for women who want to feel free from chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety, and the overwhelm that comes with managing these conditions. You don’t want to “manage symptoms” for the rest of your life, but find the root cause and heal.

If this blog post resonated with you and you’re interested in learning more about the Mindbody Healing Method, I encourage you to check out this page and see when the next available enrollment date is.

I teach my students different practices to regulate their nervous systems and get out of a fear response and into a calm, regulated, happy state of being in their lives. If you’re interested in learning more about the Mindbody Healing Method, message me on Instagram to learn when the next round of MHM is starting.
